Mrs Fitz found this one, nice easy cache n' dash. To be honest we'd had a long day driving and passed up many caches along the way as we were just too tired so it was nice to get one like this to round off our holiday.

Realised we had left the pen in the car when we got to GZ so I hope the photograph of the log will do.

Great cache location!

We were staying up the road in at Birchwood B&B overnight before catching the ferry this morning. Spent last night having food at Fordes which was superb. We were lucky enough that the local musicians had decided to meet and play that night on the off chance so we had a great meal accompanied by traditional Irish music minus the tourists. Thoroughly recommend it.

We came out of the pub and Mrs Fitz spotted the greenhouse and I thought it was such an interesting structure, I immediately wanted to photograph it - the broken glass only adds to it's mysterious alure. Too bad the property is closed off, but I guess that's safest.

Got back to the B&B but we didn't have any caches loaded for the area. Mrs Fitz used her Android to check for any nearby which is how we discovered this cache - right next to the greenhouse! So we decided to go for it after breakfast before heading to the ferry. Turns out it was the perfect time as the youths (who seemed to be doing a re-enactment of Grease last night) were not around at 7am in the morning and I was able to stand on the picnic table and take some photos of the greenhouse.

We weren't aware of the local history or the link to Hollywood just down the road, otherwise we would have booked an extra night here and arrived early. We'll definitely be back I think.

Nice break from our driving back to Watford from Fishguard (and ferry) to exercise our legs and view the area from above. We didn't see some of the parts listed in the description and I have an explanation for that below. Since we usually cache paperless, all I have is a little blackberry screen to view the cache description and I guess I didn't read it thoroughly enough - we thought we had the right footpath since it looked like a typical public footpath... turns out apparently it was not. We discovered this when we came down and had an encounter with a Welsh Dragon of sorts....

Definitely something weird on this hill with all the thistle and nettle bushes on this hill - Merlins revenge for being locked up?

Now for the Welsh dragon, encrypted so as not to lower the integrity of the cache listing....

]

This contains _TeamFitz_'s personal opinion...

On returning to the 2 gates at the bottom we were greeted by a woman who had come out to do some weeding... or rather to use weeding as an excuse to confront us. She claimed to be the land-owner and enquired as to whether we got lost. I replied and stated we had been up on the hill - she then pointed out that this path was not a free path but there was a charge.

We apologised and said we saw no sign informing us it was private and we offered to pay, we didn't have enough change but asked if she took a debit card which she didn't. She seemed more intent on putting us right about the private land part and why we didn't pay.

When I asked what she meant by this, she pointed to the sign for the Merlin Centre. Now I know there was not Centre up on that hill and told her so, but she insisted that the sign was for the footpath and we owed her 3 quid. When I stated that the sign is for the centre, and that there was no sign marking the path as private we got into a bit of an argument. Her insisting Wales is a different country to England, which technically it is, but is covered by the same laws.

She was quite insistent that her sign was enough to show that the path was private, I disagree - I told her plainly that it appears to be for the centre, not the path. I stated that I'd done a lot of walking and most landowners would put a specific sign up for the path to ensure there was no trespass. To be honest at this point it seemed to me she's got a good system going on here - catching honest walkers out by not displaying clear signs for access and fees.

We asked where the public path was, she was evasive, stating that part of the path - that she is charging for - is public. At no point did she point out where we could access the hill for free!

This is where the conversation got ridiculous, she went saying that she didn't have to display signs, that anyone wishing to use the path should ask. So we made a point of asking if the road we were standing in was private. Of course not, she answered, so we retorted "How would we know if we didn't ask?"

_TeamFitz_ have respect for all private land owners, we've even stopped to talk with some whilst walking through their land on occasion. But this one seems to be in it for the profit - I'd like to know if she pays tax on any of the fees she takes and I'd be interested to know if she has a traffic order or bylaw in place to prevent access. We didn't press this since we just wanted to get on.

Unless there is blatant disregard or destruction, we never judge how other cachers find the cache. I also don't want to encourage other cachers to antagonise this land owner or to blatantly flaunt local rules. It was an honest mistake we made and we certainly would have taken the public path if we had been more aware. However I hope this log would help future cachers and make them aware of the Welsh Dragon they may meet if they take this footpath and not feel intimidated into paying for access through to to the public path. She needs to get clearer signage - no other landowners seem to have this problem.

On our way back to Wexford for the ferry and plotted a few caches on the way.

Nice and easy find, in a clean and tidy area. Sun was out and a nice view of the valley. Got stung reaching for the cache but otherwise retrieval was not difficult.

We liked the sign. Ireland is such a tidy place, unfortunately England has some way to go to reach the standards Ireland has - there's so much litter in some places. The only thing we didn't agree with on the sign was apple cores and other fruit - I think it's akin to saying we should collect up all the berries that fall or the trees that fall over - afterall a tree trunk takes many years to decompose! Mrs Fitz was quick to point out that animals will most likely eat the discarded fruit.

So there you go. Rav4 TB dipped. TFTC!

This took much longer than expected, or intended I think.

We started off by heading to GZ, we saw the interesting steps that lead down into the river - were these bridges one time that have collapsed? - they didn't look that old.

Searched around in all the likely places, consulted the hint and we looked up and down, even in places which were not as described (found several good places for the cache if relocated). After a good long time and fruitless search we assumed it was either muggled or possibly fell down the bank.

On the way back to the car, Mrs Fitz then spotted the out of place camo immediately - 100m+ from GZ coords. Peig may want to check this cache has not drifted from the original spot - or update the coords (I have added ours).

On the way in from the ferry Mrs Fitz stopped nearby to view the Kennedy monument. It was about 6am we had sailed the red-eye and I was out like a log so only barely aware. I had no PQ so we had no idea of how many caches were on route.

So it's only fitting we stop here again on our way out to the ferry back to England (sadly) and nab this virtual. As we were getting out of the car, a local came over and implored us to go over and see the Kennedy monument since so many miss it, he then told us about a tea shop nearby where they serve the best scones and tea in New Ross. We told him we'd already seen Kennedy but didn't have the heart to tell him that we were not staying overnight and we were hitting the ferry tomorrow. Aah maybe next time.

Walked the sandy trail, which reminded me of my younger days holidaying in Devon, we got down to the beach and then headed towards where we thought the cache was. It was an interesting place with these old stone walls which I assume were part of the old outer defences?

The place was completely dry you will be glad to know, and we discovered we had overshot GZ by quite a bit, when we looked at the hint.

Another cacher once asked the question on one of our caches, "Are _TeamFitz_ mad?" well now I guess we have the answer.

We had decided to stay in Killarney one more night to sample the area, and so I floated the idea to Mrs Fitz of attempting this one again. She was not so enthusiastic, but on seeing my enthusiasm, she was persuaded.

Not to be outdone by a mere mountain, _TeamFitz_ parked at the bottom car park where we had done before and made our way up to the fork where we had been before and chosen the red (closed) route. Instead we went on ahead to the blue and was greeted by a slow and friendly elevation.

Finally we found ourselves out in a valley and soon came upon a railway sleeper and a familiar looking sheep trail. Thankfully the sheep trail turned out to be the correct footpath, as evidenced by roamers coming down, and by the presence of more railway sleepers, which took much of the hard climb out.

Another hour later and we were at the top with the magnificent, yet cloudy view of Killarney, we could even see Ross Castle which we had been at earlier that morning. The cache was soon found - hidden quite well, though the contents are a little damp.

We sat down and ate some snacks, an old Irish fellow who had been up here many times before offered to take our photo, and then we sat and talked to him for half an hour about Ireland, tabloids and politics.

When I finally stood up I was hit immediately by the wind, which reminded me we were on a mountain. A rain cloud was on it's way so we decided to quickly make our way down. We caught a little bit of the rain but we were soon in the warmer climate and making our way back towards the falls.

We have now seen and hiked on both sides of Torc Mountain and have the photos and stories to prove it.

Thanks for the experience!

After a couple of DNFs it was great to log this cache. Especially being the next cachers after our friends anfangm who we met the previous day at the Torc Falls.

I had my netbook so we headed straight to GZ parking, whipped it out and plugged in the dongle- but no signal! So we drove up the road to the crossover peak and tried there - still nothing. But my phone had got signal so I surfed for the clues on the small screen instead. (Little did we realise that the answers are hinted!)

Back to the parking spot and soon climbing the rocks up to the cache. Beautiful spot, and well hidden from the casual tourists (but there is some graffiti of the rocks nearby). I took the opportunity to dip my feet in the lake whilst Mrs Fitz signed the log.

Parked at the bottom of the falls and made our way up, taking photographs of the beautiful falls as we went.

Got to the top and saw a couple who had climbed the rocks to the top pool so decided it was safe enough for us to attempt. After jumping over a few rocks we were at the top pool where it was a little slippy but easy enough to get a foothold - got some great photos but these will have to be added later.

We then made our way down, and up the 172 steps to the cache. When we neared the ridge, we saw the other couple sitting and did our best to employ stealth. I headed down in front of the ridge with my GPSr whilst Mrs Fitz waited at the top. Since the lurkers couldn't see me I discovered the cache quickly - nice camo - and retrieved.

I then passed it up to Mrs Fitz, and as we were signing the log the bloke lurker walked over and looked down at me and asked "Have you done any other geocaches in the area?".

They were geocachers of course. Matt and Sheila (sorry can't remember your caching name), newly-weds who had signed the cache just before us! We exchanged stories then decided to head up and do the 360 cache together. Which is a whole other DNF story....

Easy walk down to the beautiful lake. After snagging the cache I decided to walk further up and take some photos of a gardener from a distance. The gardener noticed me but carried on with his job. Anyway then Mrs Fitz called out asking if I wanted to trade one of my buttons, which the gardener heard and stopped what he was doing and went "eh?"

I yelled up to the gardener "It's ok she was talking to me..." but he just froze to the spot looking at me like a dog does when he spots something strange going on in the distance.
"It's alright" I said. He didn't move.

Parking was tricky to find, we weren't sure at first but got there in the end, went through the wrong gate at first then the right one.

Lots of stings and scratches to get to the cache but when we found it we found 2! We signed the one with the log then continued down to the brook.

After an unassuming track we suddenly found ourselves in a hidden beauty spot, wishing we had remembered our trunks today - but not expecting anything like this.

Mrs Fitz had rubber sandals so she made her way out to the river rock bank easily. I hopped from one dry rock to the next, reached the rock bank. I then tried to clamber over the mini island to the opposite bank in order to get a better view of the waterfalls but met with disaster and wet socks. After that I decided to remove my socks and trainers and wade, which was great as the water was cool, clean and refreshing.

After taking some photos _TeamFitz_ were debating whether or not to go skinny dipping. It was late in the day, and Mrs Fitz was a little worried that one or two farmers would have a good eye view so we passed - but we both regretted not carping diem.

Thanks for bringing us to this secret spot and for the cache!

We hit this one at close to dusk which cast some spectacular colours over the mountainside. Cache wasn't difficult to find and it was interesting to see signature items and trade that we'd spotted earlier in the day at other caches on the peninsula.

Fascinating history to this road and considering they built it in the 1800's, wonder why they made it so twisty on the Cork side?

Getting to the second set of ruins was tricky, the ground was a little boggy, but we must have hit this at the right time of year, I dread to think of what it would be like if it had been raining. We liked the hiding spot, looked there first but didn't spot it, had to look a little deeper.

We were on our way from Cork to Kenmare and decided to take a little excursion down the Mizen Drive to the furthest South-Westerly point. Unfortunately arrived too late for the visitor centre but it looks like they had some roadworks going on there anyway.

As we were heading back, I had a PQ for the R592 but not this far and so with the netbook fired up I remarked to Mrs Fitz that there was a cache located nearby and she was all up for it. Trouble was as we got nearer the mobile broadband signal died out so we had to wardrive for a little while till we could log on a pick it up again. This time I recorded the coords and had a glance at the description and off we went.

Since it was so late, we took our chances and drove up and past the spot where the cache is. We parked outside of the drive to the 2 properties where we found a spot on the side which wouldn't block access. Made our way back to where the coords were showing and this led to a the stone wall.

As we began our exploration, I stood upon said wall and as I stood there for about 2 seconds, the large stone under my right foot gave way. I stepped across to the next large stone and this also toppled - and me with it! Thankfully I didn't get buried but I did get a bit cut and bruised.

So whilst I fiddled with the wap.geocaching.com site which is a bit naff to be honest, Mrs Fitz decided to head up the hill and did find the cache!

Signed log, took Aloha TB, and it was getting a bit dark now so off we headed to Kenmare and to a new B&B where we could get some rest after a long drive.

Excellent cache idea!

We came to this one after attempting Corks Food Emporium nearby - unfortunately the emporium had closed, little did we realise (caching paperless) that this multi would lead us back there!

However seeing that it was just one clue we needed, I was able to use my BlackBerry for Going Out Or Getting Lost If Not Good answers! Anyway, after plugging in the coords (and trying a couple of different combinations, are we counting the century or calling it by year? Wasn't sure of the coords at first but then the cache description made sense.

I turned to Mrs Fitz and said "Are you sure you want to do this one now? It's up a big hill." but she mocked me saying,
"Come on, you're not scared of a little hill?" So we made our way down the street onto St Patricks Street and rounded the corner my wife paused and went "Oh... shall we do this tomorrow?" I laughed of course and replied,
"You're not afraid of a little hill are ya?!"

So up the hill we went, after a brief stop at Laura Ashley to gaze through the windows at furniture (the wife anyway). We slowly made our way to the top then as we neared tried to check the alternate coords again. It didn't matter what combination, it always seemed to point towards the houses, but the hint indicated we were already in the right place.

So I said to Mrs Fitz, let's just go round and see. Well the hint was good enough as we were able to locate GZ and I soon spotted something that looked like a hidey hole and there it was.

A nice break from the long walk and a lovely view. We traded for the Slovak coin (not a GC) and left a hacky sack. TFTC!

What a cool little ghetto to bring us to! Too bad it was already gone 9pm when we arrived, only a few of the pubs left open. There was some kind of film crew filming an interview in front of the church on the other side as we arrived but we didn't stick around to see what it was about.

Again, quite easy, spotted it right away - before the wife too, as she normally gets these ones before me. I was taking photos of the nearby streets and out staggered a stereotypical drunken Irishman, he was in good spirit as he yelled out "Take a photo of me, we are real Irish!" - I laughed but now I wish I had because it would be a good photo to go along with the story!

Hopefully not the last cache in Cork, but we have found the people of the city fun, friendly and great to talk to - thankyou for your hospitality.

Onto a pub for a pint of Murphy's - aah that's so much better than Guinness!

We are staying in a hotel nearby and exploring this rather upmarket city. Found this cache after spending far too much time and failing at finding your other cache in the park.

A nice walk, and nice camo - made me laugh. Noticed a strange occurrence of boiling(?) bubbling water near the bank of the river a bit further down, not sure what was causing this - a burst pipe or some sort of naturally occurring geyser?

What an interesting place for a cemetery - of course, the cemetery was probably here before the restaurant. It's great that they've renovated it and made an effort for us tourists however.

Enjoyed the camo, very good and not immediately spotted by us, we were far to interested in searching for a typical nano on the gate.

Restaurant waiter was checking us out but seemed to have a 'knowing' eye, as though he's seen odd looking people wandering around lost with a GPSr in hand one too many times!

We came off the red-eye ferry at 5am this morning and decided to take a diversion to this medieval village and beach.

It had been a bit of a hectic morning. I was having trouble with pocket queries and so only ended up with a few loaded for Cork and none for the road. Since we decided to stay in B&Bs rather than camping, we didn't think to bring any extra batteries or chargers and now found ourselves running low on power when Mrs D used her Android phone GPSr to try and locate some nearby caches, but we did manage to snag coords for this one. Don't get me started on data roaming charges... all these iPhone and Android users abusing the system!

The weather was perfect today and despite according to my wife I stunk to high heaven (no shower, no change of clothes) we set off on the footpath and were treated to some truly beautiful sights - particularly the shipwreck and the watchtowers - we explored one of the watchtowers, but not the shipwreck - I just couldn't convince Mrs Fitz to go with me.

Took some photos and will try to upload these later. Hide was obvious when found, but it took a while for GPSr to settle and a bit of bushwhacking - many thorn scratches later.

Took the geokretty bug and left PC Timmy TB + Cache a Day GC!
